Increased secretion of thyroid hormones is called hyperthyroidism.
CAUSES OF HYPERTHYROIDISM:
Hyperthyroidism is caused by
1. Graves disease
2. Thyroid adenoma
Graves disease is an autoimmune disease and it is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. In this disease, the B lymphocytes produce autoimmune antibodies called thyroid – stimulating antibodies. This results in the hyper secretion of thyroid hormones.
Sometimes, a localized tumor develops in the thyroid tissue. It is known as thyroid adenoma and it secretes large quantities of thyroid hormones. It is not associated with autoimmunity.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:
1. Intolerance to heat
2. Increased sweating due to vasodilation
3. Decreased body weight
5. Muscular weakness
7. Extreme fatigue
8. Inability to sleep
9. Mild tremor

11. Toxic goiter
12. Oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea
15. Tachycardia and atrial fibrillation
16. Systolic hypertension
17. Cardiac failure
1. By using antithyroid hormones like thiocyanate, thiourylenes and inorganic iodides.
