What Are Sternal Precautions?

Sternal precautions are in place after open heart surgery for usually somewhere between 4-8 weeks to protect separation of your breastbone and prevent infection of that new incision. We’re covering the 4 general ones here, adding to that #howtohospital knowledge base, but every surgeon has his/her own specific precautions and protocol so be sure to listen to exactly what they say!
