US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro’s government illegitimate and morally bankrupt while addressing the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington D.C. on Thursday.
“The regime of former president Nicolas Maduro is illegitimate. His regime is morally bankrupt, it’s economically incompetent, and it is profoundly corrupt. It is undemocratic to the core. I repeat: the regime of former president Nicolas Maduro illegitimate,” Pompeo said.
Pompeo then expressly voiced Washington’s support for opposition leader and self-declared interim president, Juan Guaido, and called on other OAS states to do the same.
The US Secretary of State went on to call out governments who still recognize the Maduro Regime (which include Russia, China and Iran), singling out Cuba as having “aided and abetted Maduro’s tyranny.”
