Should you get a second opinion from a gastroenterologist or GI DR when you’ve been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis? I’ll breakdown my story of getting a doctors second opinion and how I met with many gastroenterologists.
These are my opinions and I just wanted to share them with you today because I want you to be as well informed as possible especially if you’ve been first diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. My resounding answer is yes you want to get a medical second opinion when you’ve been first diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.
Why? Number one all gastro doctors are different they have different perspectives not all doctors think the same way not all GI doctors think the same way. Some might tell more diet and exercise some might tell you there’s nothing you can do and you have to go on heavy medication.
My first gastroenterologist doctor was very by the book. He would just basically scare me and was my colonoscopy doctor. I ended up almost going on having to go on Remicade infusions and it was terrible. So, I took advantage of this service through my work that got me a second opinion with a GI Specialist in Seattle. This gastroenterologist was one of the top stomach doctors in the country and he confirmed my diagnosis. His practice was part of group of gastroenterology specialists in Seattle.
I did find another provider who was nice all the way up until I got pregnant then he was kind of mean so I found another doctor.
Then I finally found a nurse practitioner that I absolutely love. So that’s a unfortunate thing. I’ve yet to find a gastroenterologist that has really told me that like, yes, diet does affect this disease.
I totally get that like they can’t since there’s so many reasons why people get ulcerative colitis they can’t like say yes diet has an exact cause.
Finding a doctor that number one will listen to you, is helpful, and won’t make you feel stupid are qualities you want to look for.
The biggest thing is they just respect you. And once they know that you are your own health advocate and you take your life into your own hands it’s a great start to have a good relationship with your gastroenterologist. Making sure that you have a doctor that you can contact right away is incredibly important.
So with that I just want to conclude this video of absolutely yes, you should get a second opinion.
