Rediscovering The Art in Surgery | Shabnam Parkar | TEDxSquareMile #Generalsurgery

At TEDxSquareMile, Shabnam’s eloquent talk described how creativity helped in her daily work as a paediatric surgeon in London, which also had its challenges, especially as a woman. Shabnam realised that her passion for poetry enabled her to connect with her patients on a deeper human level, understand their stories, and see medicine in a unique way with all its connections. Everywhere you look in medicine there is art, and surgery itself is like a performance. Shabnam also shared a poem about a baby that had a profound effect on her team. Embracing creativity in our daily work can help us to see the bigger picture and thrive in all we do. When we thrive against all odds, it is with the knowledge that we accomplished the very best in our capacity and ventured beyond our limits. Shabnam is a paediatric surgeon at St George’s Hospital in London. She was the first female general surgeon and one of the youngest to join her team of consultants. Shabnam is also a performance poet and performs at various events. Her poems include themes on women empowerment, philosophy, social activism as well as medicine. She is an advocate and public speaker to help encourage girls to get into STEM careers. Shabnam is also one of the surgical leads of a charity who run yearly medical relief camps in Nepal. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
