GLEN COVE – The American College of Physicians is recommending non-drug treatments for patients with back pain lasting less than three months.
Those treatments include heat wraps, massage, acupuncture and spinal manipulation.
For people with pain that lasts longer, the group is recommending stretching and strengthening exercises, such as tai chi, yoga, meditation and acupuncture.
The American College of Physicians says prescription drugs should only be used as a last resort after other holistic approaches have failed and if the patient is still in debilitating pain.
Addiction specialists say the prescription of powerful pain drugs should not be a first option for treatment.
“There are a host of other cultures that would treat the mind and body first, and medication is actually a last resort,” says Steve Chassman, of the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.
