Today’s back pages: Manchester misery for City and United in the Premier League

It was a terrible weekend for fans of Premier League rivals Manchester City and Manchester United.

The back pages of The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian both have the headline “Manchester misery” while the Daily Mirror chooses “blankety Manc” to describe the results on Sunday.

Man City were shocked 2-0 at home against Wolves at the Etihad Stadium. The defeat means the defending champions are now eight points behind league leaders Liverpool.

City boss Pep Guardiola admitted that his players were nervous against Wolves and that Liverpool’s lead is now going to be hard to chase down.

“It’s a lot of points,” said the Spaniard. “They haven’t dropped any points, for many circumstances. But it’s better for us not to think that one team is eight points ahead.

“It was a bad day. But sometimes it happens.”

It was also a shocking day for Man Utd, who lost 1-0 at Newcastle. The defeat piles the pressure on United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Players will now join up with their countries for the international break. United’s first game back will be a huge clash against Liverpool at Old Trafford on 20 October.

Solskjaer says it’s the “perfect game” for his struggling side. He said: “The international break is also at the perfect time because their heads need a bit of airing. They will go away with their national teams, meet their team-mates and come back fresh.

“We have had a good time together, we have prepared since the first day of pre-season, we have stuck to the same principles.

“We have not got the result [against Newcastle] but we have to keep carrying on.”
